Tips for Caregivers for a Healthy Workplace
Helping people live better is at the core of everything we do. But, to help others live better, a healthy and safe workplace is the first step. Taking care of your physical, mental, and emotional health is essential to providing top quality care to our clients and residents.
October is Canada’s Healthy Workplace Month, and we’re sharing top tips for healthcare workers to have a safe and healthy workplace.
- Ensure you are properly protected from infections.
Caring for our clients and residents means we encounter a variety of germs and bacteria. While these may not make you sick, it is important to take precautions to stay healthy at work. This includes washing your hands after caring for a client or resident, using proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when needed, and getting your annual influenza vaccine to protect against the flu!
- ‘Lift with your legs’!
As a healthcare worker, most of your day is spent on your feet. You also push, pull, bend, and move in various ways to care for our clients and residents – many of which can cause injury or strain. Remember to use proper techniques such as lifting with your legs instead of your back, and utilizing lifting equipment when moving a resident
- Live a healthy lifestyle.
Things such as proper nutrition, exercise, and taking care of your own mental health contribute greatly to having a healthy workplace. Try bringing your own lunch to work full of healthy fruits and vegetables, drinking less coffee, and trying yoga or mindfulness to help take care of yourself first.
