Eliza’s story: Care that becomes part of a family

For more than 20 years, Eliza has provided care as a Personal Support Worker (PSW) with ParaMed in Oakville, Ontario. Like PSWs across ParaMed, she supports clients in their homes with skill, compassion, and a deep sense of responsibility – building trust day by day through care that goes far beyond tasks.

She has always been drawn to work that makes a real difference in someone’s day, grounded in a belief that kindness, patience and a positive attitude can go a long way.

Years after supporting Joan – known to her family as “Nan” – Eliza learned just how much that care meant. In ‘This is Nanny Joan’, a book written by Joan’s daughter, Vanessa Somerton, Eliza is recognised for the role she played during a challenging time for the family. The tribute was unexpected but speaks to the long-lasting connections PSWs build through trust, humour and presence.

“Eliza, if this book ever makes it into your hands, know from the bottom of my heart that I thank you. Thank you for choosing to be a Personal Support Worker for those in need and for going to work every day with a genuine heart. I thank you for everything you did for Nan during your tenure with her and for everything you did for Mom. Your effort never went unnoticed, and I want you to know the impact on our lives.” – Vanessa Somerton, ‘This is Nanny Joan’

Eliza was touched to learn about the chapter dedicated to her. “It felt very emotional and incredibly special. You never expect the work you do or the care you give to be remembered in that way,” she says. “Seeing myself and the impact I had reflected in the book made me feel appreciated. It reminded me that the relationships we build and the kindness we show can leave a lasting impression”.

In the book, Vanessa reflects on the relationship Eliza built with her grandmother — one rooted in trust, humour and respect.

“Eliza was one of Nan’s PSWs but quickly became more than just a worker to us. She became family. She walked in the door with confidence I had yet to see from any worker… The banter between the two made my heart swell because it reminded me so much of my relationship with Nan.” – Vanessa Somerton, ‘This is Nanny Joan’

“People might be surprised to learn that being a PSW is not just about helping with physical tasks,” Eliza says. “It’s also about emotional support, trust, companionship, and making someone feel valued and seen. Many clients look forward to the connection just as much as the care itself. I love what I do.”
